Luxury Hotel Review: Cappadocia Estates
A cave hotel should be on everyone's travel bucket list! Not only does it make for a unique travel experience, but cave hotels incorporate the surrounding geography into the architecture, and create comfort in what was once a more...let's call it "primitive accommodation offering" for mankind. A close friend put us in touch with Lale, at SRM travel, so we took advantage of her local knowledge and recommendations. She pointed us in the direction of Cappadocia Estates.
Why is it called a cave hotel?
The rock and soil in Cappadocia is partially composed of soft sandstone, which has enabled people to carve out and live in caves for thousands of years. It's possible to see these formations throughout the valley, and the entire landscape reminded me of those cool-looking mud castles kids build at the beach.
Sleep, Service and Food:
At Cappadocia Estates, the rooms were spacious and comfortable. No need for black out shades in here! We had our own private entryway, which was a relaxing place to sit. The grounds of the hotel were peaceful, and the whole structure camouflaged into the mountainside.
What I remember most about this hotel though was its “home sweet home” feel. When we arrived, we were not only introduced to hotel staff, but the owners (and kids) greeted us too. It was a “come on in and pull up a chair” type of environment. To say they welcomed us with open arms is an understatement; it felt more like family opening the door.
We ate most of our meals while off grounds, except for breakfast. Don’t miss out on the eggs in the morning! I still remember the cook (who was also our concierge) coming out with a beautiful plate of fried eggs, cooked in a tomato concoction (kind of like a Turkish shakshuka). I've tried to recreate this dish at home, and regret not walking into the kitchen and asking her to teach me.
Would I Return?
I really loved this property and definitely hope to return one day.
Cappadocia Estates is a small family run establishment, so you will not find “big” amenities like a pool, nor gym. Our days were packed with adventure and sightseeing, and we therefore looked forward to pulling into the driveway each night for a restful sleep and recharge. I hope to see you again one day, Cappadocia Estates!
