North Shore Vs. South Shore: Accommodation Review
Where you choose to stay depends on what you’d like to do during your Hawaiian vacation. Head to the South Shore if you'd prefer some R&R, hotel pampering, and time by the pool. This region generally has more predictable sun. If you’ve envisioned a vacation filled with hiking, beach hopping and swimming in open water, then the North Shore is your best bet, and there are excellent property rentals available (updated: there are also hotels like the new Westin, but most hotels are in the southern and eastern regions). If you’d like to have your cake and eat it too (like me), split your time and vacation on both the South and North Shores.
(Note: The west side isn’t developed for tourism, and while there are lodging options on the Eastern Shore, there is also more air traffic noise).
South Shore: Grand Hyatt Kauai
The Grounds:
Upon entering the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, you’re greeted with a gigantic open air lobby, and welcomed with a refreshing drink. Before you know it, hotel staff place a colorful leis made of native flowers around your neck, and off you go to explore! The grounds are quite large, featuring 3 pools, beach access, tennis courts, multiple restaurants, fitness center, spa, and golf course. In short, this is a massive resort with everything you need right on site.
As you sip your welcome cocktail, you’ll meander between freshwater ponds, through rows of palm trees, and wide open grassy lawns to just sit and relax. When you’re ready to head back to your room, you can rest up on fresh white-linens surrounded by “beachy” interiors.
When it’s time to have fun in the sun again, you can check out Shipwreck Beach or Poi’pu beach. Additionally, there are 3 pools to choose from. There is a shallow tide-pool themed section for all guests. They bring the sand in, and it’s like being directly on the beach. There is also a regular pool for both families and adults. And finally, the hotel features an adults only pool with a private bar, and hot tub.
What's nearby?
When you’re ready to venture off grounds, you’ll want to head west to Waimea Canyon, also called the Pacific Grand Canyon (PGC). You’ll first drive through rows of Eucalyptus trees, and then along highways that hug the coastline. When you finally make the climb to the canyon, have your camera ready! This region offers some of the most stunning hiking -- there are 800 foot waterfalls, and overlooks of the Kalalau valley. Additionally, you have the option to drive through the national park, or there are endless hiking trails if you prefer to get out and stretch your legs.
Would I Return?
If you’ve made the decision to head south, then yes this hotel is a perfect option -- whether you’re traveling as a couple, or a family with kids, the Grand Hyatt has some of the best amenities, which allows its guests to customize their own experience. It will definitely be my choice if I ever return to the southern region of Kauai with my children.
North Shore: HomeAway Rental
If you’ve selected to stay on the North shore, get ready for incredible lush, green, Jurassic Park style scenery, all of which you can view from your balcony, sipping a refreshing drink. This accommodation gets high marks from Compass Roam because it’s the best of a hotel and rental combined -- you’ll feel like you hit the jackpot with your 5 star views and resort services, but with wallet friendly prices.
When we pulled into the resort complex, we were greeted by friendly staff, a bellhop to help with bags, and a tour of the property. You’ll have access to the complex’s pool and tennis courts, and there’s even a small restaurant / bar if you’d like to pop in for a quick snack and drink. The condo complex isn’t directly on a beach, but has direct mountain views because of its' higher elevation. However, there is a path that leads down to Puu Poa Beach, which has kid friendly calm water and is a relaxing place to spend the afternoon. It’s a 7-10 minute walk (or alternatively you can take a golf cart down). You get all this all for under $200/night!
The room perfectly fit our north shore vacation goals -- we were looking for a clean place to crash after adventures of beach hopping or hiking. There is a comfortable king-sized bed, a newly renovated bathroom, a small sink, coffee pot, and mini fridge. Lastly, you’ll be treated to unobstructed views of Hanalei Bay, which is only a short drive away. We went to the Hanalei Bread Company in town every morning for breakfast, which serves pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and other scrumptious treats.
Would I Return?
Yes, absolutely! This rental property is perfect for 2 adults (or 2 adults and 1 small child). If you’re traveling with a larger group, I would explore HomeAway for apartments in this complex (Hanalei Bay Resort) that offer more space.
